There was a subtle complaint, by the Chairman of the Committee that the Tuckshop blog has been rather quiet. Or, perhaps the complaint was more directed at the Blog-master. So, either I resign, or I make amend. Anyway, Bee Lok has displayed his local talent, artistically, to design a Homecoming logo (in case you are not aware, the logo has appeared on this blog for quite a while). Like all events worth their salt today, there is a logo, and if need be, vision and mission statements! Anyone care to contribute? Or, are we waiting for some foreign talents?
Looks like I have run out of excuses for the silence. I have been procrastinating silently for so long. I hope many of you silent majority out there will say (or write) something. Or, like me, you have been waiting for a window of opportunity, or a soft landing, or a rare confluence of improbable factors. Hopefully, there should now be enough reasons and windows for people to come into the Tuckshop for an assembly. No one should be left out on a limp.
Last week, May 5th saw the passing of a Rafflesian, Kwek Teng Khoon, a scout leader, a volunteer. Someone who had touched, mentored and inspired the lives of many generations of Rafflesian scouts. The obituary, from past and present 32nd, 2101/01 Raffles scouts reads:
Always a Scout, friend, mentor, leader, to all of us. We will always remember Kwek as the Scout Master who leads by example, fulfilling the Scout Promise and Scout Laws every day, and living life to the fullest. His readiness to help anyone, his unselfishness, his kindness and his words of wisdom will always live in our hearts.
In our unique way, we mention Kwek in our blog as a tribute to his many years of volunteerism and leadership in the scouting and Rafflesian spirit.
The committee has been doing some serious work, some of which involved the serious tasting of food from a couple of prospective caterers. The program for the night, the teachers and guests we are inviting, and other details are also being finalized. I understand that there will be some entertainment and humour, and more songs than one can sing, without the need for any reserved apologies.
Some of you have handed over your cheques for the event. The response so far has been encouraging. We have received one donation for the school's needy students and one sponsor to underwrite any budget shortfall for the dinner. No names to be disclosed as of now. There will be a better time and place for a more appropriate announcement. In the meantime, please do not procrastinate or wait for a better window.
Will there be? Well, sometimes, we think we know. But often, we do not. As usual, on hindsight, after the event, or any event, there will be many windows of opportunities for everyone to offer analyzes and commentaries. Perhaps, drop by in the Tuckshop for a break and be in the eye of the storm. There's really no reason to wait for a perfect storm, for a tea break, or other breaks for that matter. Send your contributions and/or dinner cheque now. ;-)
